Ludhaina, Punjab (May 16, 2014): Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate and senior Sikh lawyer Advocate Harwinder Singh Phoola lost Lok Sabha election from Ludhaina to Congress party’s candidate- Ravneet Bittu.
Ravneet Bittu secure just above 3 lakh (3,00,459) votes. Advocate H. S. Phoolka bagged 2 lakh 80 thousand (2,80,750) votes.
Badal Dal candidate Manpreet Singh Ayali positioned third with 2 lakh 56 thousand (2,56,590) votes. Independent candidate Simarjeet Singh Bains secured 2 lakh 10 thousand (2,10,917) votes.
Ludhaina was one of the most puzzled contests for Lok Sabha elections 2014 in Punjab.
Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) was first to declare it’s candidate, Manpreet Ayali. However the ruling party faced harassment when party’s associate member and Punjab legislator Simarjeet Singh Bains declared to contest election as independent candidate.
Aam Aadmi Party fielded senior Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Harwinder Singh Phoolka from Ludhaina.
The seat was held by senior congress leader and minister Manish Tiwari, who declined to contest Lok Sabha elections by citing health reasons.
The Congress party fielded Ravneet Bittu, grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Ravneet Bittu was sitting MP from Anandpur Sahib constituency and he was also declared party candidate from that seat. But he was later shifted to Ludhaina.
