Amritsar, Punjab (January 06, 2012): To mark the 24th martyrdom day of Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh, Jathedar of the Akal Takht bestowed honour on the near and dear ones of both the martyrs at Golden Temple today. Notably, both were hanged on this day 24 years ago for assassinating the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who ordered army attack on Darbar Sahib in June 1984.
Jathedar Gaini Gurbachan Singh presented a siropa to Tirlok Singh, father of Bhai Satwant Singh at a function organized by SGPC to pay tributes to both of them. SAD (A) president Simranjit Singh Mann and Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh were also present on the occasion. SGPC president was conspicuous by his absence. However, manager of Sri Darbar Sahib was present.
No speech was delivered but Ardas was performed in their memory. However, Jathedar Akal Takht accorded them the status of ‘martyrs of faith’.
While talking with media, Kanwar Pal Singh said on this day, we pay rich tributes to them as they sacrificed their lives to avenge the sacrilege of Darbar Sahib and Akal Takhat. Eulogizing their contribution and sacrifice, he said Sikhs feel proud of them and have full respect for their martyrdom.
