Chandigarh/ Punjab (February 23, 2014): Instead of making any concerte announcement about the permanent release of three Sikh political prisoners confined in Chandigarh Model Jail, Burrail the Punjab government said that it was looking to find out what could be legally done in these cases.

Talking to mediapersons at Chandigarh few days back, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal reportedly said that the matter would be seen from the legal point of view.

It may be recalled that the Punjab and Haryana High Court has already directed the Central Government and the UT administration to take a decision on the pleas of Bhai Gurmeet Singh and Shamsher Singh for their release as per the new premature release policy.

Lodged in Burail jail, Shamsher Singh and Gurmeet Singh had argued in the High Court that they should not be discriminated against. Other life convicts were being released after 14 years in jail, but the government was not considering their request.

It may be recalled that Bhai Gurmeet Singh and Shamsher Singh along with Bhai Lakhwinder Singh was granted 28 days parole in last December (2013) after 44 days long hunger strike by a Haryana based Sikh. Trio are currently serving imprisonment for life in Burail Jail. They were convicted in former Punjab CM Beant Singh’s assassination case.
