Ludhiana, Punjab: Ludhiana rural police today arrested Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa from his Hassanpur based residence, where he was observing indefinite hunger strike seeking release of Sikh political prisoners. Sources present at Hassanpur told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that a police party led by SSP Harcharan Singh Brar arrived at Hassanpur at around 7:30 pm and took Bapu Surat Singh Khasla in to custody.

The police party comprising area SPs, DSPs and SHO said that they had orders from high officials to take Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa for medical check-up.

Sources said that Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa urged Sikh Sangat present at his house to not to clash with the police. He urges the Sikh sangat to remain clam and support his peaceful struggle.

The police has reportedly hospitalized Surat Singh Khalsa at Civil Hospital, Ludhiana.

It is notable that Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa is on indefinite hunger strike since January 16. He was previously hospitalised by the police on February 8 where he was force-fed from February 27 to April 24. He was discharged from hospital on April 24 after his family had held meeting with president of India. After that Surat Singh Khalsa had continued his hunger strike at his house.

Representatives of Bandi Singh Rihai Sangharsh Committee, that was formed to support Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s struggle, had held a meeting with Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal on May 28. In this meeting CM Badal had announced to form an 8 member legal experts committee to find out ways to secure release of Sikh political prisoners. CM Badal had nominated four members and rest of the four members where to be nominated by the Sangharsh Committee. It is notable that the Sangharsh Committee has not finalised four names till date. Serious questions are being raised over the failure of the Sangharsh Committee to nominate members for the legal experts committee.
