Barnala (November 13, 2009): Bhai Daljeet Singh Bittu, Chairman of Shiromani Akali Dal, Panch Pardhani is acquitted by Barnala Court in a 2006 Sedition case. Advocate Rajdev Singh informed SikhSiyasat Network over phone that this case was registered against Bhai Bittu in April 2006 and its’ trial took more than three years to conclude. Bhai Bittu was booked for sedition by Congress Government headed by Captain Amrinder Singh, for opposing forceful acquisition of fertile land of Sikh farmers by the State. It is notable that such land not acquired for any public purpose rather it was secured by the State for a private business house called ‘Trident’. Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema while commenting on the decision inter alia said that it is daily practice in Punjab to book Sikh leaders under charge of sedition but these cases seldom result in conviction. ‘This trend signifies the political use of process of law to suppress legitimate and democratic struggle of Sikhs’ he added.
