New Delhi, India: The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led Indian government today formed a committee to examine the possibility of constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for reinvestigation of the Sikh massacres of 1984.

The move assumes political significance as it came ahead of Delhi assembly polls. Delhi was the worst hit area during genocidal violence against the Sikhs in November 1984.

It may be recalled that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Arvind Kejriwal had recommended the formation of ‘SIT’ to Delhi Lt. Governor, but the investigation team was not formed.

The Committee appointed by BJP government is headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retired) G P Mathur. The Committee will submit its report within three months.

The effectiveness of any SIT after 30 years of the massacres remains to be seen and the past experiences of denial of justice to Sikhs in India don’t hold out much hope.
