Amritsar: The Sikh Sangat has gathered at Akal Takht Sahib in large numbers to mark the memory of Ghallughara June 1984 and pay homage to Sant Jarnail Bhindranwale and other Sikh martyrs who had laid their lives to defend the Sarbat Sahib complex during Indian army’s attack in June 1984.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) have made tight arrangements to keep the Samagam under their control. The “Akal Akhara” place between Darshani Deori of Darbar Sahib is heavily ‘barricaded’ and the place inside the Akal Takht Sahib is occupied by SGPC employees and SAD workers. Even the sitting place in front of Akal Takht Sahib is occupied by SGPC employees, who could be seen vacating their place to make sitting space for SAD (Badal) leaders.

The whole path from entery to exit of the Akal Takht Sahib is being guarded by SGPC men.

Notably, many Sikh leaders have been arrested by the Punjab police on the directions Punjab Government in wake of today’s Samagam.

There is heavy deployment of police and other forces outside the Darbar Sahib complex.

It may be recalled here that Indian Army’s attack on Darbar Sahib in June 1984 is remembered as third major Ghallughara (Holocaust) in Sikh history. An annual function at Akal Takht Sahib on 6 June marks the memory of the Ghallughara & the martyrdom of Sant Jarnail Singh and other Sikh worries who had defended the Darbar Sahib from Indian Army’s invasion.
