Chandigarh, Punjab (March 29, 2012): As per media reports former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), KPS Gill, during whose tenure former chief minister Beant Singh was assassinated in 1995, termed the efforts to save Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana from gallows as “perversion of system”.

Justifying hanging of Balwant Singh, who has been convicted in the assassination case, Gill is reported to have said that it was a strange situation when the convict wanted to go to the gallows and the state government was going overboard to oppose it.

It is notable that KPS Gill is praised as “super cop” by Indian media. People of Punjab call him “butcher of Punjab”, as he unleashed region of state terror on people of Punjab and ordered and supervised the mass level killings of civilian Sikh population. Under his command mass level atrocities were committed on Sikhs in Punjab. Torture, abduction, enforced disappearances, custodial killings, fake/staged encounters, illegal secret cremations of dead bodies and other forms of Crimes against Humanity was general policing pattern during his tenure as DGP of Punjab.
