NDP of Canada expresses concerns over continous hunger strike of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh

Ontario, Canada (December 21, 2013): In a statement sent to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the New Democractic Party (NDP) has expressed concern over continous hunger strike of Sikh activist Bhai Gurbaksh Singh who is seeking release of 6 Sikh political prisoners who are kept behind the bars beyond the terms of their sentences.

“New Democrats are concerned about the condition of Gurbakash Singh, a protester in Punjab who has been on hunger strike for 37 days to highlight the treatment of prisoners detained under counterinsurgency laws in India” reads the statement.

“The Punjabi-Canadian community has expressed concern that some prisoners have completed their sentences and are being held beyond their terms”, it reads further.

New Democracts’ statement says that [m]any are also worried about reported irregularities in the application of law, and escalating tensions that could further disturb the peace.

“New Democrats urge the government to work towards a peaceful resolution to the situation” it reads further.
