Sangrur: On October 26, 2024, Sikh Jatha Malwa, in association with Akaal Council Mastuana Sahib, held a remembrance event at Akaal Degree College Library, marking the 40th anniversary of the November 1984 Sikh genocide. Sangat members participated in 40 recitations of the Chaupai Sahib, paying tribute to the memory of those who suffered.

During the event, Parmjeet Singh Gazi, editor of Sikh Siyasat, highlighted key aspects of the genocide, discussing how the Indian state allegedly attempted to deny and diminish the gravity of these events. Parmjeet Singh Gazi shared ongoing efforts by the Sikhs, especially the Sikh diaspora, to gain recognition for the 1984 targeting of Sikhs as genocide on an international level, stressing the importance of awareness and documentation.

Panth Sewak Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu also addressed the gathering, underscoring the significance of remembrance and resilience. He emphasized that both June and November 1984—referred to as Ghallughara by Sikhs—remain painful yet indelible in the community’s collective memory. Bhai Daljit Singh remarked on the power of remembrance in reaffirming the truth.

In a notable release, Neesaan Publication introduced three books on the Sikh genocide during the event. The first, Sirf Delhi Nahin (November 1984), or “Not Only Delhi,” authored by Gurjant Singh Bal, contains state-by-state lists of sites beyond Delhi where Sikhs were attacked, expanding the narrative to a India-wide scope. The second publication, Nasalkushi Ate Sikh Nasalkushi 1984, along with its English translation, Genocide and Sikh Genocide 1984, authored by Parmjeet Singh Gazi, presents a comparative study on definitions of genocide and examines the 1984 events within this framework.

These releases contribute to the historical record, highlighting the Sikh community’s ongoing commitment to preserving truth, seeking justice, and educating future generations about the November 1984 genocide.
