After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, a dispute started between the two countries over the distribution of the waters of 6 rivers of Punjab, Sindh, Jhanab, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. Seeing the situation getting worse, the World Bank mediated an agreement between the two countries in 1960.

This agreement is called Indus Water Treaty 1960. According to this treaty, the water of the three rivers Ravi, Beas and Sutlej will be available for use by East Punjab. The waters of the three western rivers, the Indus, the Jhanab, and the Jhelum, were used by West Punjab (Pakistan). This is video recording of speech of Bhai Mandheer Singh
