Ludhiana: Samvad (ਸੰਵਾਦ), a discussion forum, has announced to hold a Seminar on “Role of Media and Entertainment Industry in Indian Nation Building” at Punjabi Bhawan, Ludhiana (Punjab) on September 10, 2016.

A release issued by the Samvad today states that senior journalist Anil Chamadiya (Media Studies Group), Dr. Gurmukh Singh (Punjabi University, Patiala), Dr. Sewak Singh (Eternal University, Baru Sahib) and Mali Sawariya (Ph. D. researcher at Delhi University) would present their papers in this seminar.

This is going to be fourth such seminar by Samvad on issues related to “nationalism” (Watch Videos of previous seminar at http://samvadblog.com).

The release further notes that the construction of single nation entity in a multinational and multi-cultural region like the Indian sub-continent always takes toll of diverse cultures, languages; religious, linguistic, cultural and ethnic entities and their beliefs. This seminar would explore the role played by Indian Media and Entertainment Industry in the ongoing process of Indian Nation building and its’ impact on linguistic diversity, on the identity and beliefs of different religious, cultural, linguistic and ethnic entities.

Media does not merely share news or impart information, it propagates specific world view by popularising specific terminologies, incept concepts and construct opinion in such ways that the receiver does not even realise that he/she was going through such a process. The State uses media as a tool to further its ideology and the Indian State has used state-sponsored media to build the presumed/constructed notion of the Indian Nation. Similarly, the Entertainment Industry, including the Cinema, Music and Soap Opera, is yet another powerful tool at the hands of the State to serve inter alia this specific purpose i.e. building the presumed notion of the Indian Nation.

As per Samvad it will be an open invitation seminar for listeners/attendees.
