New Delhi, India (June 10, 2013): According to a news report published by YesPunjab.Com: Paramjit Singh Sarna, the former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and president of SAD (Delhi) moved a petition on June 10, 2013 in Delhi High Court seeking a stay on November 1984 Sikh Genocide Memorial proposed by the present committee headed by SAD-Badal.
“Sarna has moved High Court with the logic that the proposed memorial should not be allowed to be constructed inside Gurdwara Rakabganj as announced by DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK. DSGMC has chalked out a programme for June 12 to lay the foundation-stone of the monument to be erected. The foundation-stone is to be laid by five Sikh high priests. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar are scheduled to attend the event”, YesPunjab.Com report reads furhter.
It is expected that High Court would take up the petition on June 12.
Paramjit Singh Sarna talking to your news-portal YesPunjab.com said that he is principally against construction of memorials in historic gurdwaras and had been asking SAD-Badal and the present DSGMC not to go ahead with construction of memorial inside Gurdwara Rakabganj.
“As they failed to listen to my point of view, I have taken the refuge of Delhi High Court and sought a stay on construction of memorial”, he said.
He alleged that the motive behind the construction of such memorial is political and that’s why SAD-Badal even tried to rope in BJP in the foundation laying ceremony.
Sarna said that he had told SAD-Badal office bearers of DSGMC that he could help get them land in Delhi for the memorial but they didn’t listen to my advice.
I recently met UPA Chairperson Ms Sonia Gandhi and requested her to get allotted a suitable place for memorial in Delhi.
“When the SAD-Badal opposed my project and went to High Court, I had given an undertaking in the High Court that nothing would be constructed inside the Gurdwara without the permission of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). I have brought this fact also into the notice of High Court”, he said.
“Interestingly, NDMC has also gone to court against the construction of the memorial”, YesPunjab.Com report reads further.
Sarna’s objections are considered to be politically motivated because Sarna Bothers are known for openly aligning and supporting the Congress Party.
It is notable that thousands of innocent Sikhs were massacred in Delhi and elsewhere in India during first week of November 1984. The massacres that took place during initial days of November 1984 were part of a coordinated and wider plan of Sikh genocide. Many Indian politicians belonging to Congress (I) party face allegations of orchestrating the genocide. These culprits are being protected and patronages by the Indian state for last three decades.
