SGPC Resolution Seeks Release of Sikh Political Prisoners

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee’s General House held yesterday passed a resolution demanding release of Sikh Political Prisoners. The resolution, which runs in general terms and does not refer to the concerned persons as ‘Sikh Political Prisoners’, has urged the central government and the state government to grant them release.

ਮਤਾ : ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦਾ ਅੱਜ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਜਨਰਲ ਇਜਲਾਸ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਜੇਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿੱਛਲੇ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ‘ਟਾਡਾ’ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਾਂ ਅਧੀਨ ਨਿਰਦੋਸ਼ ਨਜ਼ਰਬੰਦ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਰਜ਼ੋਰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (Text of Resolution passed by the SGPC).

Resolution: Today’s general house gathering of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee, Sri Amritsar appeals to the Government of India and various state governments to release innocent Sikhs jailed since past decades under ‘TADA’ and other black laws. (Translated from Punjabi by the Sikh Siyasat News).

Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, who maintains the list of Sikh political prisoners, said that the Punjab government has passed a law related to permanent parole to prisoners which awaits cabinet’s nod to turn operative. He said that the government should take initiative to grant release to the Sikh political prisoners who have completed their jail terms but still denied benefits of ‘premature release’.
