Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has once again sought the return of rare manuscripts and historical documents that were taken away by the Indian Army from the Sikh Reference Library during June 1984 attack. Notably the Indian army had invaded the Darbar Sahib complex in June 1984. It is accused of taking away rare manuscripts and historical documents while reducing the rest of the library to the ashes.

The SGPC officials said that the rare artefacts were taken away by the Indian army. SGPC chief secretary Harcharan Singh made a verbal demand yesterday to Indian Army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag during his visit to the Darbar Sahib.

Harcharan Singh said that the SGPC has has over the years written a number of letters to the government of India seeking the return of manuscripts and books. “But the fate of several books and manuscripts seized from the Sikh Reference Library is still unknown”, he added.

It may be recalled that India’s former defence minister George Fernandes had once assure the SGPC of looking into the missing manuscripts. However, nothing has been done since then.
