Amritsar Sahib: The Sikh Youth of Punjab has criticised the statement of Punjab CM Amarinder Singh that surplus water was being discharged as a precautionary measure to prevent flooding in the areas along the Sutlej and Beas.
SYP president Paramjit Singh Mand questioned the Chief Minister that if water was ‘surplus’ then why the canals in Punjab were dry at a time when the demand of water was high due to paddy season.
“If the Punjab has ‘surplus’ water then why farmers are being forced to pump out groundwater through costly tubewells” he questioned while maintaining that Punjab CM’s statement was totally misleading.
“Due to the loot of river waters of Punjab by the Indian state, the state is at the brink of disaster and is leading towards desertification” he added while pointing to the fact that the number of dry zones are increasing at an alarming rate in Punjab.
Taking a jibe at Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who had tried to encash anti-Pakistan sentiments of Hindutva sections Paramjit Singh Mand questioned Sukhpal Khaira’s silence over loot of Punjab rivers by non-riparian states like Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana.
