Anandpur Sahib, Punjab (March 17, 2014): It is learnt that singer-cum-actor Jassi Jasraj and lawyer Himmat Singh Shergill, who has been fighting the case of Gujarat Sikh farmers in the Supreme Court, have emerged as the two main contenders for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket from Anandpur Sahib constituency.

Congress party has re-fielded Ravneet Bittu, grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who is sitting MP from Anandpur Sahib. Punjab’s ruling party Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has named Prem Singh Chandumajra as it’s candidate from this constituency. Singer-cum-actor K S Makhan is Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)’s candidate for Anandpur Sahib seat.

As the Aam Aadmi Party is yet to announce its candidate, both Jassi Jasraj and Himmat Singh Shergill have started participating in the party’s activities and connecting to people.

It is notable that Jassi Jasraj had joined Aam Aadmi Party in Jalandhar on January 9 in the presence of AAP spokesperson and working committee member Sanjay Singh. Jassi hails from Sohali village of Sahibzada Ajit Singh (SAS) Nagar district.

Jasraj, who has recently released a promotional song supporting Aam Aadmi Party, said AAP had brought a ‘revolution’ in the country and a wave of fighting against injustice and corruption prevailed in society.

Jasraj said Arvind Kejriwal had the ability to change the political system and was the real hero who, along with Anna Hazare, had signalled an historic shift by his anti-corruption campaign.

On the issue of AAP ticket from Anandpur Sahib, he reportedly said: “It is up to the party high command to give me ticket or not. I would continue supporting AAP even if it declares another candidate from the Anandpur Sahib seat”. He further added that he was committed and wanted to work for people.

Lawyer Himmat Singh Shergill, who has been fighting the case of Sikh farmers of Gujarat in the Supreme Court, said, “I have applied for the ticket from Anandpur Sahib and it is up to the party to decide.”

Shergill, who belongs to Chandigarh, said he is the legal adviser to the party the ideology of which motivated him to join it.

According to Hindustan Times (HT): Prof Nanak Singh, Dr Sohan Singh and Bhag Singh from Rupnagar besides others have applied for the ticket from this seat.

In Punjab, AAP has announced candidates from Ludhaina (HS Phoolka), Sangrur (Bhagwant Maan) Patiala (Dharamvira Gandhi), Gurdaspur (Sucha Singh Chhotepur) and Faridkot (Prof. Sadhu Singh).

AAP had announced late comedian Jaspal Singh Bhatti’s wife from Chandigarh, but after she refused to contest the elections, the party announced actress Gul Panang as it’s candidate from Chandigarh.
