Patiala: Students and Research scholars of Punjabi University (Patiala) on April 6, 2018 held a protest demonstration against releasing of controversial film Nanak Shah Fakir. Students and research follows said that the film violates the basis tenets of the Sikhi as it attempts to personify Guru Nanak Ji. Notably, personification of Sikh Gurus is strictly prohibited in Sikh tradition. Students asked that when Sikhs are not willing to accept the film, why the makers of the film were hell bent to enforce it on Sikhs? During this demonstration, the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) talked to students and research fellows and this video report is based on that talk.

Notably, the producer of Nanak Shah Fakir film had earlier released the film in 2015 but it was withdrawn in wake of strong opposition from the Sikh panth. The producer had managed to get support letter from former SGPC chief secretary Harcharan Singh, who had remained a controversial figure during his entire tenure in the SGPC. He had announced to release the film with the support and ‘blessings’ of the SGPC and even the SGPC was supporting the film. The SGPC’s move was strongly criticised by the Sikhs after which it withdrew its support.
