Mohali: A Mohali court on Tuesday (1 Sept.) rejected the bail plea of former DGP Sumedh Saini in Balwant Singh Multani murder case.
The decision has opened option for Sumedhi Saini’s arrest. This case was registered against Sumedh Saini on 6 May 2020. He was granted anticipatory bail u/s 364 as earlier this case was registered for ‘abduction with intent to murder’.
After some former police officials registered their statements with court disclosing that Balwant Singh Multani had died due to third degree custodial torture, section 302 (IPC) which related to crime of murder was added to the FIR. Though the court had granted interim bail to Sumedh Saini pending his application for anticipatory bail in relation to s. 302; the bail application was finally dismissed on Tuesday.
The court in its order said: “[A]pplicant-accused Sumedh Singh Saini is guilty of a heinous crime and does not deserve extra ordinary relief of anticipatory bail. His custodial interrogation is necessary to further investigate into the matter. Therefore, without commenting upon other merits of the case, I hereby dismiss this bail application”.
Sumedh Saini has now option to move to the High Court against Mohali court’s order before his arrest.
According to reports Sumedh Saini is hiding to avoid his arrest. A SIT team had conducted raid on his house few days back but he was not in his sector 20 Chandigarh based house.
This case related to abduction, enforced disappearance and murder of Balwant Singh Multani by Sumedh Saini in December 1991, who was SSP of Chandigarh at that time.
