Yasin Bhatkal, Four Others Awarded Death Penalty in Hyderabad Blast Case

Hyderabad: A special court of NIA has reportedly sentenced Yasin Bhatkal and four others to death sentence punishment on Monday in a case related to twin blasts in Hyderabad in which 19 people were killed and 130 had sustained injuries. Yasin Bhatkal is said to be the founder of Indian Mujahideen (IM).

Others who are sentenced to death by the court include Mohammad Ahmed Siddibappa, Asadullah Akthar alias Haddi, Pakistani national Zia Ur Rehman, Mohammad Tahseen Akhtar alias Monu and Ajaz Shaikh.

A copy of the judgment will be sent to the Hyderabad high court for confirmation of the sentence.

“The convicted can further appeal in the Supreme Court of India against the verdict,” an NIA counsel reportedly said.

The trial of blast reportedly took one year in which the NIA produced 158 witnesses, 201 pieces of material evidence and furnished over 500 documents.

The NIA court also imposed penalties ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 on each of the five convicts for the blasts that rocked Dilsukhnagar, one of Hyderabad’s busiest commercial districts, on February 21, 2013.

“It also asked the government to provide adequate compensation to the families of the blast victims,” media reports quote an NIA counsel.

Mother Says Her Son’s Name is not Yasin Bhatkal:

As per certain media reports, [a]fter Indian Mujahideen operative Yasin Bhatkal was sentenced to death for the 2013 Hyderabad blasts, his mother claimed that his real name was Mohammad Ahmed Sidibapa, and not Yasin Bhatkal.

“We have petitioned the High Court thrice in the past against branding my son Mohammad Ahmed Sidibapa as ‘Yasin Bhatkal’ but nothing happened,” she said according to a report.

We do not know who is Yasin Bhatkal. My brother’s name was Mohammad Ahmed Sidibapa and we do not know why my brother was named Yasin Bhatkal,” Abdul Samad, a close relative of Yasin was also quoted as saying.
