Ludhiana: Former Congress councillor Parminder Mehta and his nephew Tikshan Mehta were today booked for allegedly making derogatory remarks on Sikh gurus and Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Tikshan Mehta has been arrested while Perminder was on the run.
Dharmpal, SHO, City Kotwali Inspector, said both Congress leaders were booked under Section 295 A (hurting religious sentiments ) and 120B. He said they had made objectionable comments while chatting on mobile phones through micro-blogging website whatsapp. Their messages had gone viral, he added.
A group of Sikh youths demonstrated against Mehtas near the Municipal Corporation office on June 05. They demanded arrest of both culprits. Protestors were led by Badal Dal leader Manpreet Singh Bunty. The protesters also presented a memorandum to the police authorities in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Congress distanced itself from Parminder Mehta’s utterances and suspended Mehta. Condemning strongly the views expressed by Mehta, PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa said the party had nothing to do with such inflammatory utterances.
Partap Singh Bajwa said it appeared that the leader had given such provocative statement at somebody’s behest to vitiate the atmosphere in the state.
