MPP Jagmeet Singh hosted Brampton’s only Tarion Town Hall Review Meeting

Brampton: Ontario NDP’s Deputy Leader Jagmeet Singh held the only Tarion Town Hall review meeting in Brampton, on Tuesday evening. Justice Cunningham was appointed by the Ontario government with a mandate to review protections for owners of new homes and identify opportunities to improve consumer protection and was present to‎ hear the concerns of the constituents in Brampton last night.

As one of the fastest growing cities in the country, Brampton has a great deal of new homes being built. “I’ve heard from many consumers, from all over Brampton saying Tarion is not providing the care, protection and service that Ontarians require and deserve,” the MPP from Bramalea-Gore-Malton explained “in fact, Tarion is working against home owners time and time again.”

Because of the large number of new homes and residents who have experiences struggles with Tarion, MPP Singh felt it was imperative that Brampton’s voice was reflected in Justice Cunningham’s review and advocated to secure an additional date for public consultations in Brampton.

Topics such as of requesting reforms and mediation for Tarion, greater oversight on home builders in Ontario and calling for more government regulation on home builders and warrantors were amongst the top items consumers discussed.

“Tarion is the only home warranty program that exists in Ontario. It is mandated; when you purchase a new home, you have to purchase a Tarion warranty. Tarion’s purpose is to provide accountability, or to provide protection for the consumer when it comes to home builders and developers but these home owners are telling you that Tarion is to being held accountable when claims are failing through the cracks or being denied.”

Compared to the public consultations across the province, last night’s meeting was one of the largest Tarion Town Hall Review public consultation. Justice Cunningham’s report is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.
