Patiala, Punjab (May 17, 2014): Bibi Kamaljeet Kaur, sister of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana – a Sikh political prisoner facing death penalty in India, was first candidate announced for Lok Sabha elections in Punjab.
Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana who is currently confined in Central Jail Patiala and whose constitutional review petition against death penalty is pending before the President of India had announced to field his sister Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur for Indian Parliamentary elections in October 2013.
Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur was able to secure only 15,313 votes from Patiala Lok Sabha seat. She ended up at 4th position.
Patiala witnessed a triangular contest between Dharamvir Gandhi (Aam Aadmi Party), Preneet Kaur (Indian National Congress) and Deepinder Singh Dhillon (Shiroamni Akali Dal-Badal).
The Patiala seat was win by AAP’s Dharamvir Gandhi who secured more than 3.65 lakh (365671) votes. Patiala MP and Congress leader Preneet Kaur secured 3.44 lakh (3,44,729) votes. Deepinder Dhillon of Badal Dal spotted at third place with 3.40 lakh (340109) votes.
