Sikh bodies demand memorial for those who had assassinated Indira Gandhi

Amritsar, Punjab (November 6, 2013): It is learnt that various Sikh groups have demanded construction of a memorial for Shaheed Beant Singh, Shaheed Satwant Singh and Shaheed Kehar Singh. Bhai Beant Singh and Satwant Singh had killed Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 – Indira Gandhi was responsible for ordering attack on Darbar Sahib and other Sikh Gurdwaras in June 1984. Bhai Beant Singh was had attained martyrdom while assassinating Gandhi whereas Bhai Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were sentenced to death by Indian courts.

The relatives of trio were honored by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, Akali Dal Panch Pardhani working head Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, Dal Khalsa spokesperson Bhai Kanwarpal Singh and Damdami Taksal head Baba Harnam Singh on October 31 during a ceremony held to observe Bhai Beant Singh’s martyrdom anniversary.

While talking to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Bhai Harpal Signh Cheema informed that a memorandum demanding a memorial for Bhai Beant Singh, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh was handed over to Jathedar Akal Takht on October 31. The memorandum was signed by representatives of various Sikh bodies.

Kanwarpal Singh said that the memorial could be in any shape or at any place in the Darbar Sahib complex.

It is notable that Bhai Beant Singh Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh have been declared as national Sikh martyrs and their portraits are already placed in “national Sikh museum” situated with in the Darbar Sahib complex.
