Akal Takhat Jathedar want Nanak Shah Fakir film be banned

Amritsar, Punjab: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has supported the SGPC’s demand for a ban on the movie “Nanak Shah Fakir” stating that it should not be released. He also objected to Harinder Sikka, producer of Nanak Shah Fakir film, using his name for the promotion of the controversial movie.

While talking to media persons, Akal Takhat Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said “[n]obody can play the role of Sikh gurus and their family members. The film should not be released until the producer deletes all such scenes.”

He said the movie had sparked widespread resentment among the Sikhs and the filmmaker should address their concerns.

On the argument given by the filmmaker regarding use of computer graphics to portray Guru Nanak Ji, he said it was against Sikh tenets to personify Sikh Gurus.

Sikh intellectuals feel the trend of showing Sikh gurus in human form in films should be stopped.

The Tribune quotes Ashok Singh Bagrian saying that it was high time to curb this trend as it might set a bad precedent. He also felt that Sikh gurus should be portrayed symbolically in the films.

Sikh Siyasat talked to various Sikh intellectuals and activists who said that portrayal of Sikh Gurus through human actor, animation, portraits or computer graphics etc. were prohibited under the Sikh tradition (read full news/report).
