Khadoor Sahib: In a significant turn of events, Amritpal Singh, the president of Waris Punjab De party, founded by the late actor turned politician Deep Sidhu, is set to contest the upcoming Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha) elections from the Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab as an independent candidate. However, his candidacy comes amidst a challenging backdrop as he, along with eight others, has been detained in Dibrugarh jail in Assam for a year now under the stringent National Security Act. Earlier Amritpal Singh, upon returning to Punjab and assuming the preseidentship of Waris Punjab De, had declared that he would contest no elections. His family members say that under changed circumstances he has decided to contest the run for Lok Sabha from Khadoor Sahib constitency.
The announcement of Amritpal Singh’s candidacy initially surfaced from Advocate Rajdev Singh Khalsa, a former Member of Parliament, and was subsequently confirmed by Amritpal Singh’s family. Notably, his bid for the parliamentary seat has garnered support from the Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann), prompting the party to withdraw its own candidate in solidarity with Amritpal Singh.
However, the political landscape in Khadoor Sahib remains competitive, as the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has fielded Virsa Singh Valtoha as its candidate for the constituency.
