Balwant Singh, a resident of Village Rajoana Kalan, near Raikot of Ludhiana Distirct of Punjab, assassinated Punjab’s then Chief Minister Beant Singh on 31 August, 1995. Beant Singh’s regime was responsible for mass level violations of human rights, enforced disappearances, fake or staged encounters of civilian Sikh population of Punjab, torture and other forms of crimes against humanity.

After his arrest he confessed his involvement and explained that they assassinated Beant Singh to halt the circle of oppression on civilian Sikh population. He refused to contest the case in any Indian court or take services of any lawyer, as did not expressed any faith in Indian state or Indian judicial system. He accused Indian system for applying dual standards of law and pointed towards deliberate failure of Indian system to nail the culprits of mass violations such as the Sikh Genocide 1984, genocidal violence against Gujrati Muslims in 2002 and carnage of Christians in Orisa in 2008.

Bhai Rajoana has urged Sikh masses to host “Kesri” flag on their rooftops on the day of hanging. A Chandigarh court has fixed 31 March as day of hanging but Punjab jail authorities have refused to execute the court order on technical ground.
