Curfew reportedly imposed in Kashmir valley after Afzal Guru’s execution

Sri Nagar, Jammu & Kashmir (February 09, 2013): There are reports that authorities imposed curfew in all  major towns of Kashmir Valley Saturday in wake of execution of Afzal Guru, who was convicted for his alleged role in the attack on the Indian parliament in 2002. Afzal was hanged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi in February 09, 2012.

It is notable that Afzal Guru belongs to Tarzoo village on the outskirts of Sopore town, 52 km from Sri Nagar.

“Although no senior police officer confirmed that the curfew restrictions were being imposed in the wake of Afzal’s hanging, police officers, however, confirmed that curfew restrictions had been imposed”, YesPunjab has reported. 

“Yes, we have taken preventive measures to maintain law and order”, a senior police officer reportedly told IANS, a news agency. 

It is notable was Afzal Guru was arrested on Dec 12, 2001 in Parliament attack case. 

As per media reports police and paramilitary forces were out in full gear there to impose curfew in Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, Badgam, Kupwara, Ganderbal and the north Kashmir Sopore towns.

As per reports Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is said to be flying back to Srinagar from winter capital Jammu. Omar Abdullah and his party, the ruling National Conference (NC), have opposed Afzal Guru’s hanging.
