Dal Khalsa condemns police for mercilessly thrashing protesting farmers

Dal Khalsa

Amritsar, Punjab (February 22, 2014): A day after police mercilessly thrashed protesting farmers, the Dal Khalsa asked the Akali Dal government to stop the danda-raj in Punjab.

Terming the lathi-charge on the farmers as ugly and shameful, Dal Khalsa office- bearers said the police of Punjab have perfected the art of public torture in full public view by resorting to cane-charge in the name of restoring law and order.

Punjab police resorted to brutal lathicharge on demonstrating farmers at Amritsar on February 21, 2014.

In a statement party’s secretary for human rights Pritpal Singh and district president Baldev Singh Ajnala said that newspapers have highlighted how Punjab Police launched a barbaric lathicharge on peaceful demonstrators and misbehaved with the agitating women. They expressed grief and sympathy with the family members of the deceased Bahadur Singh, who allegedly died due to police high-handedness.

They said police brutalities against cross section of the society including pharmacists, ETT teachers, veterinary doctors beside farmers, has become order of the day. This has been going on in full media glare without any remorse and with full impunity. Urging the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to act against guilty officers, they said an exemplary departmental punishment was required to rein in the “uncontrolled” force.
