Don’t chain Jagtar Singh Hawara during court appearances: Court tells Delhi police

New Delhi: A Delhi court has reportedly issued directions to the Delhi police to remove chains of Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara during his court appearances. The directions came yesterday during a court appearance of the Sikh political prisoner before a Delhi court in case u/FIR 229/05, Alipur police station, u/s 120 (B), 121 and 307 (IPC).

It is notable that when the Delhi police force brought Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara from Tihar Jail to the court complex, he was handcuffed and chained. He was presented before the court of judge Ritish Singh.

Bhai Hawara’s counsel and senior lawyer Maninder Singh raised strong objections against Delhi police’s practise to chain Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara during court appearances. After hearing arguments of both parties, the defence and the prosecution, the court issued directions that Delhi police can not chain Jagtar Singh Hawara during court appearances. However, the court said, the police can handcuff Jagtar Singh Hawara for his court appearances in Delhi.

Moreover, these directions would not be applicable to Jagtar Singh Hawara’s court appearances in other cases outside Delhi.
