DSGMC Seeks CBI Probe into Allegations of Torture on Sikh Political Prisoners in Tihar Jail

Chandigarh: The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has sought CBI investigations into allegations of torture on Sikh political prisoners inside Tihar jail. In a written statement issued on Saturday (Sept. 23), DSGMC’s legal representative Jaswinder Singh Jolly said that the CBI must probe into an attack, involving attempt to murder, on Sikh prisoners Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya.

In his statement Jolly said that DSGMC chief Manjit Singh GK has written a letter to the director of the CBI in this regard.

The DSGMC representative, however, did not extend much details of the said incident.

On being contacted by the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur who is legal council of Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara said that no incident of attack on Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara has taken place inside Tihar Jail. He said that on September 16 Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara was presented before a local court in Ludhiana via video conference from Tihar Jail.

“During this court appearance, Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara told me that he was shifted to a ‘Chakki’ (isolated cell) on August 22 where he languishes till date” said Advo. Jaspal Singh Manjhpur.

“He also told me that he is not moved out the cell except for court appearance via video link or for meeting a visitor”, Advo. Manjhpur added.

There was not incident of attack on Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara, however, during an alarm in a barreck where Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya is confined, he (Bhai Lahoriya) was beaten up by the jail staff, he added.

On being contacted, Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya’s wife Bibi Kamaljit Kaur said that due to some problem between gangster inmate lodged in same barrack as Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya, there was a security alarm. After which the jail staff lathicharged inmates and taking advantage of the situation a jail officer called Mr. Tyagi beat up Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya.

She said that due to increasing number of gangsters inside the Tihar jail such disturbances have become daily affair and they fear that jail authorities may inflict grave harm to Bhai Daya Singh under the guise of such disturbances.

Advo. Jaspal Singh Manjhpur said that there was no justifiable ground to keep Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara or Bhai Daya Singh Lahoriya confined in Tihar Jail in Delhi therefore the Delhi and Central government must transfer them to Punjab without any undue delay.

Advo. Manjhpur said that the Indian state was harassing Sikh political prisoners inside Indian jails, including torturing them mentally and physically.
