Irom Sharmila set free by Manipur court; Amnesty urges Manipur govt. not to rearrest her

Manipur: A Manipur court has acquitted Irom Chanu Sharmila of the charge of attempting to commit suicide, and ordered her to be released. Irom Chanu Sharmila is declared to be “Prisoner of Conscience” by Amnesty International, India.

The court said, “One may appreciate the resolute commitment of [Irom Sharmila] to her stand rather than take it as an excuse for slapping her with charges of criminal offence”.

Amnesty International India has urged Manipur authorities to respect the court ruling, and not re-arrest Irom Sharmila on the same charge

The court said that the prosecution had “miserably failed to prove the charges… of the offence of attempt to commit suicide.”

Meanwhile the Amnesty International India has urged Manipur authorities to respect the court ruling, and not re-arrest Irom Sharmila on the same charge.
