Langar served at Canadian Parliament in Ottawa on Sikh Awareness day

Ontario, Canada: On Wednesday (Sept. 24), Tim Uppal, minister of state for multiculturalism, participated in langar (community kitchen) on the Hill, which brought Canadians together to learn about Sikhism.

“I would like to thank young Sikh volunteers from the Sikh Youth Federation (SYF) for their work to make this day possible,” said Uppal. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Canadians of all faiths and backgrounds to come together and learn about their Sikh neighbours. In Canada, our diversity is our greatest strength, which helps to foster and enhance a greater understanding of our different cultures.”

This all-day event in celebration of Sikh awareness took place in the heart of Canada’s capital on the steps of Parliament Hill with a variety of activities.

Free langar was distributed to all who attended, which included ministers and members of the Conservative government, as well as members of Parliament from all parties.

‘Langar’, is the concept of ‘free kitchen’ and is a regular practice in Sikh institutions of worship (Gurdwaras). Langar symbolizes equality of all as everyone sits on the floor together to eat a vegetarian meal regardless of background.

Attendees were also given the opportunity to have a Dastaar (Turban) tied on their heads.
