Lawyers to watch activities of SGPC candidate

sgpc elections 2011 smallAmritsar (August 7, 2011): As per media reports, senior Sikh advocate in Supreme Cour tof India, Sirdar H. S. Phoolka has said that independent groups, led by Sikh lawyers, would keep a watch on activities of candidates contesting SGPC polls.

H. S. Phoolka, who is fighting cases for victims of November 1984 massacre of Sikhs, said if the Gurdwara Election Commission did not take action against errant candidates, Public Interest Litigations would be filed in the High Court of Punjab and Haryana or the Supreme Court of India.

He said groups of legal luminaries would keep a watch on activities of candidates particularly those pertaining to distribution of money and intoxicants or other malpractices.

Senior lawyer is further reported to have said that attempts were being made to enrol at least 50 such volunteers in each constituency, adding all social and religious Sikh bodies had been contacted in this connection.

The SGPC elections will be held on September 18 and results will be declared on September 22.
