Chandigarh (October 28, 2013): According to information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), Sikh political leader Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu’s bail petition was allowed by Punjab and Haryana High Court after extensive arguments on October 28, 2013. Bhai Daljit Singh was booked by the Punjab police under notorious law called “Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act” for political reasons.
Akali Dal Panch Pardhani (ADPP) Secretary General Bhai Mandhir Singh, who attended today’s court hearing, informed Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone from Chandigarh that an affidavit was field by the prosecution in the High Court regarding so-called evidence against Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu.
“On previous occasions also the prosecution was asked to file such an affidavit but it had filed an affidavit enumerating allegations against Bhai Sahib. Therefore it was asked by the Judge to resubmit the affidavit specifically on the evidence”, he added.
“This time” Bhai Mandhir Singh informed, “the prosecution stated two things in its evidence: Firstly, that Gur Singh a driver of Jaswant Singh Azad had told the police that Jaswant Singh had given fifty thousand rupees to Bhai Daljit Singh for carrying “terrorist” activities. Prosecution’s claim regarding Gur Singh’s statement was rebutted by Advocate Rajwinder Singh Bains, counsel of Bhai Daljit Singh, who told the court that the prosecution was trying to misguide the court as Gur Singh has already been examined by the trial court and his statement does not mention the story told by the prosecution in its affidavit. Advocate Bains produced copy of trial court’s papers to support his argument”.
“Second thing stated by the prosecution in its affidavit was that Jaswant Singh Azad had purchased a house worth rupees eighteen lakhs in Ludhiana that has been given by him to the Akali Dal Panch Pardhani to conduct ‘terrorist activities’. Advocate Rajwinder Singh Bains successfully rebutted this argument and told the court that Akali Dal Panch Pardhani is a political-religious organization that was duly registered with the Gurudwara Election Commission. He further said that ADPP had successfully contested SGPC election from Phillaur constituency from ADPP candidate was elected for the general house of SGPC”, said Bhai Mandhir Singh.
Advocate Bains reportedly told the court that the property of Jaswant Singh Azad is at rent with the ADPP and produced the documentary evidence in this regard. He further said that Akali Dal Panch Pardhani is a lawful organization that has never been banned by the Government.
After hearing the arguments the judge K.C. Puri allowed the bail petitions of Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu and Jaswant Singh Azad.
It is notable that this case was registered by the Jalandhar police against a British citizen Jaswant Singh Azad on September 29, 2012, while Bhai Daljit Singh was arrested by Ludhiana police on September 21, 2012 under another case. Later on the police attached the names of Bhai Daljit Singh and Jaswant Singh Azad in Jalandhar and Ludhaina cases respectively.
Bhai Daljit Singh was given bail in Ludhiana case on July 16, 2013 by Justice Inderjit Singh of Punjab and Haryana High Court who had passed strong comments against the prosecution case against Bhai Daljit Singh.
Bhai Daljit Singh has been continuously targeted the Punjab government by arrested him on false charges under sedition laws and/or the UAPA for political reasons. Bhai Daljit Singh holds the Sikh nationalist ideology and the state want to curb the Sikh nationalist activity by keeping Bhai Daljit Singh behind the bars on false charges.
