The rights body also urged various social organisations to reach Pahuwind village in Tarn Taran district on May 21 to formulate a plan of action to make the state drug-free.

“We demand a CBI inquiry into the matter or that the High Court take a suo motu notice,” said retired Colonel GS Sandhu, chairperson of the body.

Accompanied by Justice (retd) Ajit Singh Bains, chairman of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO), Sandhu said a large amount of drugs flowed into the state through the international border with Pakistan. He said several MLAs were supporting dug peddlers in border villages.

He said Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal needed to take action against party leaders, including Vir Singh Lopoke, Gulzar Singh Ranike, Harmeet Sandhu and Virsa Singh Valtoha, who are allegedly involved in the drug trade and whose names were disclosed by Shashi Kant. The Congress leadership too needed to deny tickets to leaders such as Amritsar legislator OP Soni, who is named as drugs trader by Shashi Kant.
