Jalandhar: Rights body Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), which had earlier managed to block Punjab Congress president captain Amarinder Singh’s canvassing among Punjabi NRIs in Canada for ensuing Punjab assembly election by filing a complaint with Canadian authorities, has now filed a defamation suit of one million dollars against him in Canada for linking the body to Pakistan’s ISI.
14 page defamation claim filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice also seeks a permanent injunction preventing Capt Amarinder from republishing or facilitating the republication of the defamatory statements.
‘Statement of Claim’ issued by local registrar of the Court on July 18 informs the defendant – Captain Amarinder Singh – that “A legal proceeding has been commenced against you by the plaintiff ” and also explains that if notice is served outside Canada or US then the defendant will have 60 days to submit a reply, failing in which a judgement can be given against him.
SFJ legal adviser Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said that they would serve this court notice on Amarinder Singh in India through Hague Convention.
Claiming injury to SFJ’s reputation, the lawsuit states that by “making defamatory statements Amarinder has caused reputational damage to SFJ’s status as non-profit organization and have hindered its ability to address ongoing issues of significance to Canadian Sikhs”.
“On April 24, 25 and 26 Captain made various defamatory statements against SFJ which were published in several online media and read by thousands of individuals”, further states lawsuit against Amarinder. After his campaigning was blocked and SFJ had also filed a complaint against him in a Candian court that atrocities were committed on Sikhs during his regime, Amarinder hit back against SFJ saying it was playing in ISI’s hands.
