Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab (June 15, 2014): According to certain media reports, the Punjab government has granted clearance to Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University for setting up its first off-shore campus at Mikandu in Kenya. As per information the Commission of Education, Kenya has already granted approval in this matter. In fact Punjab government’s clearance came up in wake of approval by Commission of Education in Kenya.
According to the University authorities the decision was taken after consultation with the Sikh and Indian community and the Kenyan authorities.
While holding a press conference at Fatehgarh Sahib on June 14 evening at the university, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, SGPC general secretary and Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, vice-chancellor said the initial cost of the project, spread over 75 acres, would be Rs. 20 crore.
Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia said that by setting up off-shore campus, the exchange programmes would be held, besides sending the academic staff to Kenya on deputation.
Dr Walia said it was learnt that there was an acute shortage of academic staff in Kenya.
He said initially four courses: science, commerce, management and Sikh religion- would be started.
Sports activities will also be held. He said the off-shore campus would be run by a trust.
