United Sikhs Files Criminal Complaint Against Narayan Dass for Offensive Remarks About Sikh Gurus

Amritsar: United Sikhs, an international Sikh group, filed today a criminal complaint with S S Shrivastav, the IGP cum Commissioner of Police of Amritsar, against Narayan Dass who has uttered degrading, blasphemous and inflammatory words against Guru Arjan Sahib Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, which has hurt Sikh religious sentiments and could incite communal hatred and violence.

In a YouTube video last week, which went viral and also appeared on other social media sites, Narayan Dass, not only questioned the integrity of Gurbani (Sikh scriptures) but also demeaned and questioned the shaheedi (martyrdom) of Guru Arjan Sahib Ji.

The complaint that was filed via Bhai Satnam Singh Khandewala and Bhai Major Singh through United Sikhs Advocates Sandeep Gorsi and Neetu Singh is against Narayan Dass, directors, agents, officials, representatives and employees of all the said social media sites for offences under Section 153 (A), 153(B), 292, 293, 295(A), 298 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. The complaint has also been copied to the Indian Prime Minister, Panjab Chief Minister, Union and State Home Ministers and the DC of Amritsar.

“The video threatens the secular fabric of India and has hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs and civil society. We ask enforcement agencies not to wait until more harm is done before taking action against Narayan Dass. It is submitted that the police and the government has not initiated any suo moto action to register any case against Narayan Dass nor have they taken any measures against the social media sites and its concerned officials to prevent him from uttering any further such words. We are concerned that Narayan Dass may be speaking at a public meeting in Amritsar on 20th May 2018,” said Mejindarpal Kaur, United Sikhs International Legal Director.

“The Video recording has been provided to police and we urge the media and public not to publicize it as it is offensive and inflammatory and it threatens racial harmony, just weeks before Sikhs commemorate Guru Arjan Sahib Ji’s martyrdom day,” she said.

“We have requested the Police Commissioner to register our complaint, take cognizance of the offence, as the contents per-se amount to commission of offences, and lodge an FIR to prosecute the accused persons for committing the offences, without delay,” she added.
