Prof. Bhullar’s case – Govt. of India to oppose commutation of death sentence

New Delhi, India (March 05, 2014): As per certain media reports the Government of India (GOI) has decided to oppose commutation of death sentence awarded to Sikh political prisoner Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar.

According to a news reported by Indian Express (IE) the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to oppose the commutation of death sentence of Prof. Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, notwithstanding his poor medical condition.

The MHA, which has to file a reply in the SC on March 10 to a commutation plea filed by Prof. Bhullar’s wife Bibi Navneet Kaur, has decided to take a stand against commutation to life imprisonment.

It is notable that the MHA on previous hearing in the Suprme Court had told the SC that Prof. Bhullar will not be executed in his present health condition.

It is notable that Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in January had favoured commutation of the death sentence to life term on “on principles of human ethics and natural justice”.

The Centre had recently moved SC opposing the commutation of death sentence of three assasins of Rajiv Gandhi on the grounds of delay in deciding their constitutional review petition by the President of India.

“Besides Rajiv Gandhi’s killers, we have moved SC against commutation of death sentences of 15 people… In Bhullar’s case we are going to stick to the stand, the only consideration being his deteriorating health,” said an official.
