SGPC President says ‘high hopes’ with Centre govt. for release of Sikh political prisoners

Chandigarh: Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) has written a letter a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the release of Sikh political prisoners who are confined in jails even after serving the terms of their sentences.

SGPC president said that the SGPC was trying its best to seek the release of detainees, and that the matter is waiting in the hands of the Centre Government.

On being asked about SGPC’s silence over Sikh Prisoners’ issue and hunger strike of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa the SGPC president said that SGPC President stated that he has already raised the matter with Indian Prime Minister and SGPC has high hopes that the Centre Government would release Sikh prisoners soon.

Avtar Singh Makkar was consistently asked about the hunger strike of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa. In response to a question, he said that the “hunger strike of Bhai Gurbakhsh Singh is his personal decision, but SGPC has always remained serious about Sikh issues.”
