Punjab cops did not produce Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana on Jan 29; Next court appearance scheduled on Feb 04

Patiala, Punjab (February 03, 2013): As per media reprots Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who has been sentenced to the death by an Indian court for the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, and is lodged at the jail in Patiala, was supposed to be presented in the court on January 28, 2013 but he was not presented in the court due to alleged security reasons.

As per a Punjab News Line (PNL) news reprot dated: January 29, 2013: “SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill sent a letter to Sanjeev Beri’s court and stated that deputy chief minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal, had a programme in Patiala. Following this, the police in Patiala will be busy in Sukhbir’s security, leaving no time for Rajoana to be presented in the court. If Rajoana was presented in the court with less security then it could have been dangerous, the SSP wrote. The court agreeing to this has now set February 4 as the new date for Rajoana’s case hearing”.

It is notable that Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana was presented in the court on January 21, 2013 and the police had stepped up security for doing this.

The PNL reprots has maintained tha tdue to security reasons, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana was not being presented in court for about nine months.

The court in December 2012 had passed orders to hear Bhai Rajoana’s case through video conferencing and he was suppose to be presented in the court through video conferencing on January 15, 2013 but he denied doing this and demanded that he should be presented before the court in person.

Agreeing to his demand, the district court ordered that Rajoana has to be present in person in the court for the hearing. The police presented Rajoana on January 21 amid tight security. The next hearing was supposed to be yesterday but the police could not present him in the court January 28, 2013.
