Forced Castrations – High Court gives last opportunity to Sirsa based controversial dera head to file reply

February 5, 2014 | By

Chandigarh/ Punjab (February 05, 2014): It is learnt that the Punjab and Haryana High Court, on February 04, gave last opportunity to Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to file his reply on charges of forced castration of his followers inside the dera. The Dera head has been asked to respond on the issue in the next hearing scheduled on February 24.

Directions have been issued in the wake of a petition filed in 2012 by Hansraj Chauhan in which it was claimed that he along with around 400 followers of the dera were castrated by giving them false hope that the men who do so would be able to meet God under dera dead’s guidance.

Taking cognizance of the main petition, the high court had ordered to conduct medical examination of petitioner Hansraj Chuahan at Government Multi-speciality Hospital (GMH), Sector 16, Chandigarh. Hospital authorities examined him and found that he had been castrated. Thereafter, the high court had issued a notice to Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to file his reply on the matter but he has not given his submission to the court despite being given several opportunities.

Hansraj Chauhan claimed that he had been associated with the dera since 1990 and he used to sing bhajans (hymns) and play musical instruments at the sect’s headquarters in Sirsa. He said that he was inducted as a “sadhu” and was castrated in the dera complex along with 15-20 others in 2000.

The petitioner further stated that the castration led to hormonal imbalance in his body and that he has been facing changes like loosing of body hair and development of breasts. The petitioner stated that he became incapable of having children and had to face humiliation at the hands of general public who treated him as a eunuch. Seeking a CBI probe, the petitioner had also claimed that the castration process of the devotees was being done by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh through doctors employed in his hospital and in a room above printing press in the dera.

‘Murder accused castrated as well’

Petitioner Hansraj Chauhan on February 04, 2014 maintained that two accused, Nirmal Singh and Kuldeep Singh, involved in the murder of Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhaterpati were also castrated inside the dera. Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is the main accused in Chhatarpati murder case and facing trial before a CBI court. High court has asked Haryana government to ask Nirmal and Kuldeep, confined in Ambala Jail, if they were forced for castration by the dera head or not.
