Indian Supreme Court restrains Tamil Nadu from releasing those convicted in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case

New Delhi, India (February 20, 2014): The Supreme Court on February 20 restrained the Tamil Nadu government from releasing 7 persons who were convicted in former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case.

The court has reportedly directed Tamil Nadu government to maintain status quo while hearing a plea by the Centre. Seven convicts are serving life sentences for the 1991 assassination of the former Prime Minister.

“There have been procedural lapses by the Tamil Nadu government in its decision to release seven convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case,” the Supreme Court of Indis (SCI) reportedly said.
The court has also issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government and all seven convicts.

The matter will now be heard on March 6, according to TV reports.

Earlier, the Centre had moved to the Supreme court against the Tamil Nadu government’s decision.
