Bhai Daljeet Singh Bittu acquitted of Sedition Charge

June 9, 2010 | By

Amritsar (June 8, 2010): Today a local court acquitted Bhai Daljeet Singh Bittu, Chairman of Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Panch Pardhani). He was charged with sedition on the complaint of a Punjab Police employee, for allegedly making provocative speech on 6 June, 2007 at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib (Amritsar) during Holocaust memorial Samagams, held there to observe 23rd anniversary of martyrdom of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Bhai Bittu is currently lodged at Centeral Jail, Amritsar, for political reasons.
In his complaint, police employee mentioned that he there (at Sri Akal Takhat in Golden Temple complex) to pay homage at the holiest shrine. He said that he was not on duty at that time. He said that he saw Daljeet Singh Bittu making provocative speeches and distributing provocative material. He alleged that demand of Khalistan, a sovereign Sikh state, was also raised.
Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka, counsel for Daljeet Singh Bittu, informed that during trial it was found by Judge P.K. Narang that there was not even an iota of incriminating evidence against the Sikh leader, therefore he is acquitted by the Court.
It is notable that in another case of sedition, Daljeet Singh Bittu has been recently acquitted by a Barnala court, in November 2009, as the case was found to be filed on flimsy grounds.
Addressing media-persons after hearing the verdict of the court, Daljeet Singh Bittu said that he is being targetedby the police at the behest of State, Government and their agencies, in order to prevent him from contacting the masses and working democratically.
SAD (Panch Pardhani) leaders Harpal Singh Cheema and Kulbir Singh Barapind claimed that process of law, and especially Section 124 A ( Sedition) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) is being misused against Sikh leaders.
“There are several other cases of Sedition, including a case at Fatehgarh Sahib, are pending against DS Bittu” informed HS Cheema, who hails from Fatehgarh Sahib.
