Activists of NSUI, SOI, PUSU and cops engage in muscle power check at PU

Chandigarh (August 27, 2014): In a clash involving cops and activists of various students bodies, including National Students Union of India (NSUI), Students Organization of India (SOI) and Punjab University Students Union (PUSU) reportedly took place at Punjab University today, in which four youths and one policeman were injured.

The clash reportedly took place outside Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panjab University (PU). The students and activists of NSUI, SOI and PUSU had blocked the gate in protest to some issue. The clash between student activists and the police took place when the police tried to forcefully clear the gates.

According to Hindustan Times (HT), [t]he police also used mild cane-charge to disperse the crowd from the spot. Many girl students, who were part of the agitation, claimed to have suffered injuries as they tried to shield those being beaten up by the police.

Local sources revealed that the police rounded up eight persons from the spot, including NSUI president Sanjeev Sharma.

Police claims that all these 8 persons were ‘outsiders’ and were not students of the university.

According to HT, [t]he students were protesting outside the college since 9 am, demanding various facilities at the college and more time to complete the assignments. Later, they shifted the protest venue to outside the vice-chancellor’s office and sat there on a dharna, but again shifted back to the college.

Dean, student welfare, Navdeep Goyal said the police had been called as there were many outsiders among the students.

“They misbehaved with the police and tried to barge into the college. It was then that the police pushed them back. The police have not used ‘lathis’ on students,” Goyal added.

However, PU’s chief security officer Jatinder Grover said it was very difficult to find out who was an outsider. “They are often surrounded by one or two PU students. It is not possible to check the whereabouts of each and everyone who is participating in a protest,” he added.

Meanwhile, students bodies have condemned the police action on student activists.

A scheduled meeting between students’ bodies and the university administration to discuss various issues was dismissed after the incident.
