Akal Takhat Jathedar Supports “Sikhs are not Hindus” Petition to US President Obama – Directs Community to Support Signature Campaign Till December 31

Amritsar: A press release by All Indian Sikh Students Federation (Peermohammad) says “Akal Takhat Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh issued a “directive” to the Sikh community to continue signing the “Sikhs are not Hindus” petition till December 31 so that Obama be forced to raise “Sikh Issues” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Barack Obama will be the 1st American President to attend India’s Republic Day function as Chief Guest on January 26, 2015”.

Giani Gurbachan Singh while acknowledging the efforts of AISSF and “Sikhs For Justice” who have initiated the online petition to US President Obama on the issue of separate status of Sikhism, directed SGPC to support the signature camps that will be held at Fatehgarh Sahib on December 26, 27 and 28.

Emphasizing that the “Amendment” of Article 25 (b) is must as it clubs Sikhs with Hindus, Jathedar Akal Takhat further stated that the “Sikhs are not Hindus” petition with more than 100,000 signatures will be presented to US President Obama by AISSF and SFJ.

The online petition http://wh.gov/i12hT on the issue of separate status of Sikhism is filed under “We The People White House Petition” by US based “Sikhs For Justice” (SFJ). To elicit a response from Obama Administration, the petition on the issue of Article 25(b) of the Indian constitution must reach 100,000 signatures by December 31.

The petition urges Obama to question Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “WHY Indian constitution labels “Sikhs” as Hindus?” and raise the issues of “Sikh Genocide”; and “Sikhs’ Right to Self-determination”.

The directive of the Akal Takhat Jathedar is of great significance as Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal have openly stated that there is no need to “amend” Article 25 (b) which labels Sikhs as Hindus. In the past SAD (Badal) has made amendment of Article 25 (b) a political issue and Punjab Chief Minister have also burnt the copy of the Indian Constitution?

AISSF President Karnail Singh Peermohammad stated that 65 years old Sikh community grievance about Article 25(b) of the Indian Constitution stems from Explanation II which controversially states that “the reference to Hindus shall be construed as including a reference to persons professing the Sikh……”.

AISSF President stated that camps will be held at Fatehgarh Sahib on Dec 26, 27 and 28 in support of the “Sikhs are not Hindus” petition to achieve the target of 100,000 signatures.

Although the “Sikhs are not Hindus” have already more than 1,00,000 online signatures on the petition, AISSF which is spearheading the signature campaign in Punjab have also collected more than 50,000 signatures on the petition in three days.
