Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s hunger strike enters 36th day

February 20, 2015 | By

Ludhiana, Punjab: Elderly Sikh activist Bapu Surat Singh (82) is on continuous hunger strike since January 16. He is demanding release of Sikh political prisoners who have already completed minimum mandatory terms of their sentences. Earlier another Sikh activist Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa had twice started “fast unto death” seeking release of these prisoners, but he ended his fast at one pretext or the other.

Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa says that he is determined to end his life if the government fails to respond to his call. “I am determined that I will not end my hunger-strike in any case unless the government releases the concerned Sikh political prisoners. It’s not only an issue of release of Sikh political prisoners, it’s also an issue of sanctity of Ardas of a Sikh”, Bapu Surat Singh has repeatedly declared.

A family member of Bapu Surat Singh shared following update about his struggle:

“The aftershock of the 1984 Sikh ‪#‎Genocide‬ roars on as the Indian Government continues to violate the basic human rights of ‪#‎Sikh‬ political prisoners. More than a dozen Sikh political prisoners are being detained despite completion of their prison terms.

In response to this ‪#‎injustice‬, Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa has taken on a peaceful hunger strike in an effort to influence the Indian Government to reassess their actions.

Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa is now in his 36th day without food. His health is steadily declining and no resolution is in sight. He was arrested from his home and is currently being detained at ‪#‎Ludhiana‬ Civil Hospital. Police officials are attempting to force him to receive medical treatment. He is holding true to his hunger strike and is refusing all medical assistance. Police officials have set up a barrier at the hospital in an effort to prevent his children from coming to his bedside.

Please take a moment to share this brave man’s fight. We hope to expose this story and force the ‪#‎Indian‬ government to re-evaluate their unjust actions.

Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa has displayed tremendous strength and determination during his plight. Please show your support by passing this information along”.
