Canada: Statement from NDP Candidate Harbaljit Singh on the crisis in Punjab reads as follows:

Brampton: “My heart aches for Punjab today. When peaceful protests are subject to state aggressions resulting in the death of civilians, as leaders we must speak.

New Democrats are concerned about the escalating tensions in Punjab, where reports have indicated that peaceful protesters have been shot and killed by security forces.

Harbaljit Singh Kahlon

The Punjabi-Canadian community has expressed alarm that paramilitary forces have now entered the state.

Many are also worried about reported irregularities in the application of law, and escalating tensions that could further disturb the peace.

I stand with all New Democrats, in urging the Government of Canada to immediately call for a peaceful resolution to the situation.”
