Amritsar (October 14, 2011): Criticizing the state government for raining lathis on farmers protesting against the alleged forcibly acquired land at Gobindpura in Mansa area, the Dal Khalsa has asked the Akali-BJP government to stop the danda-raj in Punjab.

Dal Khalsa spokesman Kanwar Pal Singh and secretary for human rights Pritpal Singh said screaming newspaper headlines narrate the indiscriminate and barbaric lathi charge on farmers and ill-treatment with the agitating women. “Its really disgusting and painful to see police thrashing women in a brute manner”.

They condemned the daily dose of lathis on farmers and urged the chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to rein in police and restore the rule of law and also sought exemplary punishment for the errant police personnel.

Slamming Punjab government for its controversial policies vis-à-vis land acquisition, they decried that the traditional pro-farmer stance of the SAD has become thing of the past.

The government in Punjab has maintained its policy of highhandedness. The only answer it had for agitating farmers was batons, alleged both. “It is ironic that neither the courts nor the State Human Rights Commission has taken the suo motto notice of these regular acts of the police”.

They also took a dig at Congress for showing sympathy with the aggrieved farmers. To drive their point home, they said what Captain Amrinder Singh led Congress government did with the farmers of three villages in Barnala district to appease Trident group, the present Akali government has done the same with the farmers of Mansa District. “Ironically, both had treated and handled the land issue in a repressive manner”. They further said their (farmers) land should not be compulsorily acquired in any part of the state.
